2019 reflection on 'the egg suite'
Since composing these pieces, I have learned more about animal agriculture & reflected on my values and behavior. I've come to see animal agriculture as a form of oppression that I'd rather not participate in any longer. (So now I'm *vegan.)
That said, I do not wish to promote consuming eggs (or any animal products) with this work.
Still, I stand by the music, strictly aurally-speaking. I hope you enjoy the music.
In retrospect, of course, I wish I had not chosen an animal-product as a central theme of my music. At the time of writing it, I hadn't yet given the topic of animal rights much thought.
I, like most, perceived many animals only as products in grocery stores (rather than individual, sentient beings), and that distance between their sentient selves and the packaged purchase was so large that I never thought twice about it.
Food for thought:
My hope is to retroactively re-brand this suite as a representation of the consumer's journey from omnivore to herbivore—from seeing animals as products, to animals as beings.
"Aubergine" (Eggplant) is my 2019 addendum to this collection, and signifies the switch to plant-based living.
*By the way, I think that word (vegan) can trigger a lot of unfair instant gut reactions, pre-conceptions and judgments. But at its core, the philosophy is simply one of compassion to all sentient beings. I can get behind that!
